For the last two months, we have been working together with the students at Los Arboles Middle School to help them to grow a better understanding of what climate change is and how the environment they are in are connected to this issue. The LAMS students have been doing different projects every time we have gone so that they expand on their knowledge of climate change and their role in the problem. For the first week, we taught them about the differences in climate and weather so they could understand why this is more of a longterm global problem. We have also give them activities where they have to use what they think about the problem to draw their own opinions and hopes about the future. We have shown them how all areas of an ecosystem are impacted by problems and how each species is connected to each other. Finally, we have shown them different ways that they can contribute to helping the issue of climate change such as planting trees on their schools campus. Overall it seems like the students have been mostly receptive to the things that we are teaching them. However, some of the students have more of an interest than others which has made it slightly more difficult to keep them interested in the topics we are sharing with them. We have established the students that are most receptive and the ones that can get distracted most easily but we are hoping that moving towards climate action projects will get them more excited to participate in something that they can be proud of. Our group is creating a Green Wall with the students where they will be able to display their work somewhere on campus. The students will work together to build, design, and plant to make a green wall that will be visible and they can take pride in.
