CSUMB Capstone Project
The Capstone Project is a collective community project that uses the knowledge that college students have gained in their careers and education to create a beneficial plan for a topic they are passionate about.
My project in environmental studies contains multiple sustainability and climate change solution projects with collaboration at Los Arboles Middle School in Marina, CA. Both students in CSU Monterey Bay's Environmental Studies Projects course and Los Arboles Middle work together on hands-on activities which will have the general goal of having a small effect on climate change in the communities around us.
Our group was in charge of the Green Wall project. We had seven students in the group and created two green walls for LAMS. We reused wood palettes and lined them with agricultural fabric to put the plants in. Then with repurposed paint, we painted the palettes, built free-standing supports, and put them in different locations on the campus that the students thought would be good spots.
At the end of our project, we successfully produced two green walls that were placed near the outdoor classroom as well as near a classroom by the main office. Our students had fun planting and deciding where each type of plant would be. Even though our last day with the students was in the rain, we enjoyed being silly with them and making the most of the time we had with the students. The Falcons made so much progress over the 10 weeks that we were with them and we hope that they continue to be creative and foster climate action in the future.
